How to Make Your Lash Extensions Last Longer

How to Make Your Lash Extensions Last Longer

Everyone always asks me…. “How do you keep your lash extensions on for so long.”  Well, ladies, it is not complicated.  I simply follow the rules and take good care of them!  We don’t preach about proper eyelash extension aftercare because we want to hear ourselves speak ;).  Here are my top 10 tips for keeping eyelash extensions looking AMAZING!

1.  Avoid ANYTHING oil based on the face, especially close to the eye! A lot of people don’t realize their skincare contains oils…. Do your research thoroughly!

2.  Clean them… EVERY DAY!!! Clean your lashes every day to ensure that you are removing debris, built up oils, residue and built up makeup. The oils and residue will breakdown the bond of the adhesive which will cause poor retention.

3.  Speaking of makeup… I don’t wear much. Eyeliners and most eyeshadows are either oil based or don’t allow your skin to breathe.   This causes excess oil excretion, which if you are not cleaning them properly, sits on those lashes for far too long and breaks down the glue bond! Do you wear eyeliner daily? CLEAN IT OFF DAILY.

4.  Brush them – daily!

5.  Don’t sleep on your face! Silk pillowcases help, but full on face sleepers will see it affect their retention big time!

6.  Don’t touch! The less you touch them, the less oil transfers from your fingers onto your lashes ;).

7.  Avoid excess stress on your lashes.  Do you rinse all your shampoo/conditioner onto your lashes? Face cleansers? Shower stream your face every day? STOP!! Avoiding these things helps a LOT!

8.  Workouts – think of all that sweat…. Make sure to clean it out of your lashes after each workout.

8. Steam/Heat – keep it away from your lashes for excess periods of time!

Lashes aren’t work if you know how to take proper care of them!  Would you not wash your face for a week?  Not brush your teeth for a week?  HELL NO! Your lashes are in the same realm! Keep them clean, treat them kindly, and you can make your eyelash extensions last longer than you are used too! You spend good money on those lashes, make sure you’re doing the right thing by YOU to see value in it!!!

5 things you NEED to know before getting Eyelash Extensions

Ever had a conversation with your girlfriends about Lash Extensions? We’ll bet most of them had a great experience, but we’ll also bet there was some horror stories! And unfortunately, this isn’t an uncommon experience.

Like every industry, there are great technicians, and there are some who are not so great. So, what do you need to know to make sure you select the best technician for you?

  1. Is your Lash Technician certified?
    1. Believe it or not, the Eyelash Extension industry remains unregulated at this time. What does that mean? It means there are no governing rules or legislations as to what education/experience is required for them to pick up tweezers and start lashing you! It is always a good idea to ask if your technician has taken formal training. If they have invested in formal training, this shows their commitment to their craft, and to your personal safety and comfort.
  2. Are they Health Approved?
    1. This is a condition that varies based on your location and its provincial requirements. To operate a commercial or home based business legally here in Alberta, a lash technician is required to have Health Approval from Alberta Health Services. Having health approval shows a client that their technician is using products that are approved within the province for professional use, that their workspace is approved to health standards, and that their protocols for before & after care are also approved. Without formal Health Approvals, City Licensing is unable to be completed. Having Health Approval demonstrates to our clientele that we are Professionals, and our client’s health and safety is our upmost concern.
  3. What is their “style” of lash application?
    1. As with any industry, each technician tends to create a personal style of lashing. It is important to research your technician and their social media platforms, so you can determine if their work is suited to your personal style.
  4. “Should I get Classic or Volume Lash Extensions?”
    1. This is a personal choice. Everyone’s personal style will lean more towards a natural look, a cross between natural and dramatic, or dramatic! The type of lashes you choose will depend on the type of look you would prefer.
  5. What is the difference between Classic and Volume Lash Extensions?
    1. Classic Lash Extensions are a 1:1 basis, meaning 1 lash extension is applied to each 1 natural lash. Volume lash extensions are anywhere from 2-8 lash extensions per 1 natural lash. Classic lash extensions are best explained as imitating the best mascara you’ve ever owner – without the hassle of actually having to apply it and remove it everyday! Volume lash extensions are applied in a way that the ends are fanned outward, creating soft ends and a more bold lash line. Both forms are great! There are simply different styles to suit different requests.

When looking for your lash technician, buyer beware when it comes to pricing! Experienced, educated lash technicians will price themselves accordingly. Ensure their pricing is still fair within the industry, but reflects their level of expertise, commitment and education.

Best of luck in your search!

6 Reasons Your Eyelash Extensions Might Be Falling Off

6 Reasons Your Eyelash Extensions Might Be Falling Off

Let’s address the pink elephant in the room! If you have lash extensions, you know that they’re not permanent. However, sometimes our lashes last a solid 3-4 weeks, and sometimes at the end of week 2 we are thinking “What is happening?! Why are my Eyelash Extensions falling out”!!!

First of all, it is important to know that eyelashes shed just like the hair on our heads. The shed cycles vary for each person. Each individual eyelash extension is adhered to an individual natural lash. As your natural lashes shed and go through their cycle, they will shed with the extension that is attached to them. Some people have longer cycles and some have shorter cycles. The growth of your finger and toe nails, as well as the growth of your hair on your head, can often be a good indicator of how fast your eyelash growth cycle is. Typically, the faster your nails and hair grow, the faster your eyelashes grow as well. Which means that you may be experiencing shedding and regrowth within 1-2 weeks and the need for a fill more often. People with slower cycles, will likely not need to come in for a fill for 3-4 weeks.

Shedding cycles are also impacted seasonally and most people experience a shed either in the fall or in the winter. These cycles and seasonal shedding will definitely affect your lash retention, on top of many other factors.

6 other Reasons your Eyelash Extensions May be falling off:

1.   Oil – Oil is the devil in lash-world! Avoid any oil based products at all if possible. Or keep them well away from your eyes and lashes. This includes your cleanser when washing your face and shampoo’s and conditioner’s

2.   Sleeping Habits – sleeping on your face is a big no-no in lash land! Any pillowcase contact or rubbing during your sleep will affect lash retention – try to avoid eye contact, and use a silk pillowcase to reduce friction

3.   Cleaning those lashes – How often are you doing this?! Think of it this way… Every single day your skin produces oil; including your eyelids! If you add in makeup, eye makeup, a workout, etc.… and then not removing that build-up and cleaning the lashes?! That is going to equal a huge amount of oil and dirt on those lashes! This will affect your lash retention in a HUGE way! Removing makeup and cleaning the eyes properly daily will HELP your retention, not ruin it! Keep those bad boys clean, you paid good money for them!

4. Touching – We have a “do not touch” policy with our clients, as much as can be reasonable! Brushing daily is mandatory, but touching your lashes with your fingers will transfer all that oil from your fingers onto your lashes… re-visit #1 and #3!

5.   Weather – is it super windy/cold and your eyes are watering a lot?? This will wear down the adhesive on your lashes also! Keeping this in mind, lots of crying (it happens sometimes!) can also do the same thing. Cold weather can cause the bond of the adhesive to be more brittle than normal, while overly humid weather can cause build-up of oils and also lower your retention.

6.  Beauty Products – Keep in mind hair sprays, oils, mousse’s etc. usually contain oil. When spraying/using these products, make sure to keep the excess “cloud” of product away from your lashes

Lash Extensions are not high maintenance when properly cared for! Remember to follow your technicians instructions on proper after care, and you will get better longevity out of them! If you cheat, you’re only cheating yourself and your bank account!
